Helping Cats with Arthritis: Simple Changes That Make a Big Difference

Arthritis is incredibly common in cats, yet it often goes unnoticed. Certain breeds, including Persians and Maine Coons, are more prone to joint issues such as hip dysplasia, but arthritis doesn’t only affect older cats — even young cats can suffer from joint pain.

One of the biggest challenges for arthritic cats is slipping. Smooth flooring can worsen discomfort and increase the risk of injury. Non-slip flooring solutions, such as those offered by companies like Floors for Paws, may make a real difference. If changing flooring isn’t an option, runners or non-slip tape are simple alternatives that can help your cat feel more secure and comfortable moving around their home.

Practical ways to support a cat with arthritis

There are several easy adjustments you can make at home to improve your cat’s quality of life:

  • Choose a low-sided litter tray so your cat can get in and out without strain. A mat underneath will help keep litter contained.

  • Use raised food and water bowls to reduce pressure on your cat’s neck and legs when eating or drinking.

  • Talk to your vet about pain relief and preventative joint care — early intervention can make a difference.

  • Add ramps to sofas and beds to help your cat avoid painful jumping.

  • Install steps outside cat flaps to minimise impact on sore joints.

  • Provide beds at ground level, such as under your bed, so your cat has comfortable resting spots without needing to climb.

  • Opt for soft litter that’s gentle on sensitive paws. I personally like Intersand unscented cat litter, which is soft and clumps well.
